How to take admission in NIOS

NIOS admission for Class 10 and Class 12 is done online on the NIOS student portal. This guide walks through the official steps, from the first screen of the form to the enrolment number that confirms your admission.

Checked on against the NIOS Prospectus 2026–27 and the live registration page. This website is not the NIOS admission form.

Before you start the form

The Prospectus asks you to read the instructions on the portal and keep everything ready before you begin. In practice, that means:

  • You meet the age and qualification rules for your course. Our eligibility guide explains them.
  • You have scans of your photograph, signature and documents. See the documents checklist.
  • You have a working mobile number and email address. NIOS allows one email address per learner, and one mobile number or address for at most three learners.
  • You know whether you need Stream-1 (the full Class 10 or Class 12 course) or one of the part-admission streams. Streams are mutually exclusive, so you choose only one.
  • Admission is open for your block. The current dates are in our admission last date guide.

Ways to apply

Every route uses the same online form. NIOS lists these ways to complete it:

  • Apply yourself on the NIOS student portal.
  • Get help at an NIOS study centre (Accredited Institution), which can run an online registration counter and advise on courses, medium, subjects and Transfer of Credit.
  • Get help at the NIOS Regional Centre.
  • Use a Common Services Centre, which charges a pre-fixed fee published by NIOS.
The Prospectus states that NIOS does not recognise any other agency or cyber café for online admission.

NIOS online admission, step by step

These steps follow the procedure in the NIOS Prospectus 2026–27. Labels in quotation marks come from the Prospectus unless we say we saw them on the live portal. NIOS can change the wording on screen, so follow the instructions you see there.

  1. 1

    Open the Stream-1 registration page

Go to the NIOS student portal (opens in a new tab) and open the Stream-1 admission link. On 28 October 2026 the registration page read “You are registering for Stream 1 Block 2 -2026”. Read the instructions and the declaration before you continue. The Prospectus describes this step with “Register” and “Proceed” buttons; the live page may label it differently.

  2. 2

Choose your State/UT, identity and course

On the live portal on 28 October 2026, the first screen asked for “State/UT”, “Identity Type”, “Identity No” and “Course Applying For”. The identity types listed included Aadhaar, Aadhaar Enrollment, Passport, Ration Card, Bank Account and Birth Certificate, and the course is Secondary or Senior Secondary. According to the Prospectus, you also upload a colour scan of the identity document. If you use Aadhaar, NIOS checks the number, name and gender with UIDAI, and a mismatch stops the registration.

  3. 3

Fill in your basic details and verify by OTP

Enter your name, parents' names, date of birth, gender, identity number, mobile number and email address, then use “Generate OTP” to verify both. NIOS emails you a user name and password for the student portal; keep them private.

  4. 4

Add your address, category and other details

Fill in your permanent and postal address, social category, medium of study and the optional details section. Senior Secondary applicants also give their Class 10 board, roll number, year, subjects and marks.

  5. 5

Choose subjects and a study centre

Select the subjects you want to study and any subjects for Transfer of Credit. Then pick up to three study centre preferences. NIOS allocates a centre automatically, based on seat availability.

  6. 6

    Upload your documents

Upload the required documents in the documents section, then click “NEXT”. Our documents guide lists what each course needs.

  7. 7

    Review everything, including the fee

Check the whole form, including the fee details, in the “REVIEW SECTION”. Use “EDIT” on any section to correct it. Nothing can be changed after you pay.

  8. 8

Pay online and note your reference number

Pay through one of the payment gateways offered on the portal. NIOS sends the fee receipt by email and SMS, and a reference number is generated that you use with NIOS until your admission is confirmed.

  9. 9

Wait for verification and your enrolment number

NIOS verifies your documents, fee and details. Once it confirms your admission, it generates your enrolment number and tells you by email and SMS. You can check your admission status online in the meantime.

Paying the admission fee

NIOS accepts the admission fee online only. Bank drafts, demand drafts, cash and cheques are not accepted. Common Services Centre operators can pay through their CSC wallet on your behalf.

  • Pay with the application, or within 10 days of submitting it.
  • If you submit close to the end of an admission block, pay within 5 days of the block's closing date. Registration itself closes on the block's last date.
  • If a payment fails, the Prospectus says to pay again later by logging in to the student portal with the user name and password NIOS emailed you.

The amounts for each course and category are in our NIOS admission fees guide.

After you apply

Once the payment succeeds, your student dashboard opens. According to the Prospectus, it lets you:

  • Print your application form and fee payment receipt.
  • Print your identity card once it is available.
  • Check the status of the study material NIOS sends you free of cost.
  • Register for examinations and pay the examination fee, which is separate from the admission fee.

Log in through Student Login on the NIOS portal (opens in a new tab). If NIOS finds a problem with your documents, it contacts you by email and SMS, so keep an eye on both.

Common mistakes to avoid

NIOS can cancel an admission at a later stage, without refunding the fee, if the information or documents are wrong. These are the mistakes worth guarding against:

  • Entering a date of birth that differs from your documents. NIOS does not allow the date of birth to be changed later.
  • Using a name or gender that does not match your Aadhaar card exactly, which stops the Aadhaar check.
  • Choosing the wrong course, category or stream, or missing a subject, and only noticing after payment.
  • Leaving out a required document, including the certificate for an exempted-category fee.
  • Paying through a link, agent or website other than the official NIOS portal, or sharing your OTP or password with anyone.

NIOS admission process: questions

How do I take admission in NIOS (NIOS mein admission kaise len)?

Register online on the NIOS student portal, fill in the form, upload your documents, review it and pay the fee online. NIOS then verifies your application and issues an enrolment number. A study centre, Regional Centre or Common Services Centre can help you with the online form.

Where do I find the NIOS admission form?

The form is on the official NIOS student portal, sdmis.nios.ac.in, under the Stream-1 admission link. Our enquiry page is not the NIOS admission form; it only sends your question to us.

Can I fill in the NIOS admission form offline?

No. NIOS admission is fully online. If you need help, a study centre, Regional Centre or Common Services Centre can complete the online form with you.

Can I change my application after paying?

No. The Prospectus says no changes are permitted after the payment is made, so check the review section carefully first.

How long does NIOS take to confirm admission?

The official sources we checked do not give a fixed time. NIOS confirms admission after verifying your documents, fee and details, and tells you by email and SMS. You can check progress on the admission status page.

Check official NIOS information

Always confirm admission dates, fees and rules on the official NIOS website. nios.ac.in (opens in a new tab)
