NIOS admission last date 2026–27: the short answer

NIOS sets one Stream-1 schedule for both the Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) courses, split into two admission blocks. As of 20 October 2026:

  • Block-2 is the open block. Admission without a late fee runs until 31 January 2027. After that, late fees of ₹260, ₹520 and ₹910 apply in stages until 15 March 2027.
  • Block-1 has closed. Its last date was extended to 30 September 2026, and that date has passed. It cannot be used now.
  • Block-2 learners can sit their first public examination in September–October 2027, according to the Prospectus. The admission portal labels this block “OCT. 2027”.

Class 10 and Class 12 last dates

The Prospectus gives the Stream-1 block windows once, for all learners. The same dates therefore apply whether you are applying for Class 10 or Class 12. The difference between the two is eligibility and fee, not the deadline.

If you missed the Block-1 deadline

Block-1 cannot be reopened by an applicant. If you meant to apply in Block-1, these are the realistic options today:

  1. 1

    Apply in Block-2

Admission is open now. Your first public examination would be in September–October 2027 rather than March–April 2027.
  2. 2

Apply before 31 January 2027 if you can

That avoids late fees. After that, the late fee rises in steps until the block closes on 15 March 2027.
  3. 3

Check other routes if you failed at another board

Transfer of Credit and the On-Demand system have their own rules. See Transfer of Credit and On-Demand Exams.
Pay on time. The Prospectus says you must pay with the application or within 10 days. If you apply close to the closing date of the block, you must pay within 5 days of that closing date.

Admission last date vs exam fee last date

These are two separate deadlines, and missing one does not move the other. Many search results mix them up.

Blocks, streams and On-Demand registration

“Block” and “stream” are different things, and On-Demand exam registration is different again:

  • Stream — the admission route. NIOS has four, and a learner can choose only one of them. Stream-1 is regular admission for all learners.
  • Block — the admission window within Stream-1. Block-1 leads to the March–April exam, Block-2 to the September–October exam.
  • Stream 2, 3 and 4 — separate routes with their own notices and dates. A Stream 2 deadline is not a Block-1 or Block-2 deadline.
  • On-Demand Examination (ODE) — a way to sit exams when you are ready, with its own registration. See On-Demand Exams.

How to check the latest notification or extension

NIOS announces extensions by numbered notification, so a new date can appear after we update this page. To check:

  1. 1

    Open the official admission portal

Go to sdmis.nios.ac.in and see which block the Stream 1 registration page says you are registering for.
  2. 2

    Look for a numbered notification

A genuine extension has a notification number, a date and the block and session it applies to — for example, Notification 30/2026 for Block-1.
  3. 3

Check a Regional Centre notice board

NIOS Regional Centres repost these notices, for example RC Kochi's notifications.
  4. 4

    Ignore dates without a source

If a website or message gives a date with no NIOS notice behind it, treat it as unconfirmed.
Official sources: NIOS online admission portal (sdmis.nios.ac.in) (opens in a new tab) — currently shows “Stream 1 (OCT. 2027)” and “You are registering for Stream 1 Block 2 -2026”; NIOS Regional Centre Kochi, notifications (opens in a new tab) — lists Notification 30/2026 and the Stream 2 notices; NIOS Notification 30/2026 (15 September 2026) (opens in a new tab) — Stream-1 Block-I extended up to 30.09.2026. Checked 20 October 2026.

How to apply before the last date

Admission is online on the NIOS portal. You can apply yourself, or get help at an NIOS study centre, a Regional Centre or a Common Services Centre.

  1. 1

    Register on the portal

Choose your State/UT, identity type and the course (Secondary or Senior Secondary).
  2. 2

Fill in the form and upload documents

Admission can be rejected later if documents are missing, false or incomplete, or if the age or qualification criteria are not met.
  3. 3

    Review and pay online

Check every section, then pay. Keep the reference number and fee receipt.
  4. 4

    Wait for confirmation

After verification NIOS confirms admission, issues an enrolment number and informs you by email and SMS.
