How NIOS admission documents are submitted

NIOS admission is fully online. You upload scanned copies of your original documents in the documents section of the online admission form. NIOS does not ask you to post a printed form or photocopies.

If NIOS needs anything more, or finds a discrepancy, it tells you by email and SMS, and may then ask for the printed application form with your documents and photograph. An application without the required documents is rejected, and the fee is not refunded.

Documents every learner needs

The Prospectus asks all Class 10 and Class 12 applicants to keep ready:

  • A recent passport-size colour photograph.
  • Your signature, preferably in black ink.
  • A valid identity proof, such as an Aadhaar number, Aadhaar enrolment number, passport, ration card, bank account or another valid government identity card. You also upload a colour scan of the identity document you choose.
  • A valid proof of residence (see the list below).
  • A valid mobile number and email address, which NIOS verifies with a one-time password.

Class 10 (Secondary) documents

In addition to the documents above, Class 10 applicants upload:

  • Proof of your previous study: a Class 8 mark sheet, or a self-certificate.
  • Proof of date of birth: one of a birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or the district office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths (for those born on or after 26 January 1989); a passport issued by the Government of India; the original transfer certificate or school-leaving certificate from the school last attended; or an Aadhaar card with the date of birth printed on it.

For a transfer or school-leaving certificate, NIOS asks for the principal's signature if the school is a government school. If it is a private school, the certificate should also be countersigned by the State education authority or the District Education Officer.

If you upload both an Aadhaar card and a school-leaving certificate, NIOS takes the school-leaving certificate as your proof of age.

Class 12 (Senior Secondary) documents

In addition to the documents every learner needs, Class 12 applicants upload:

  • Your Class 10 mark sheet or certificate from a recognised board.
  • Proof of date of birth: the Class 10 (Secondary) certificate showing your date of birth. NIOS states that no other proof of age is accepted for Senior Secondary admission.

If your Class 10 certificate is from a foreign board or university, NIOS asks for a certificate from the concerned Embassy and from the University Grants Commission confirming that it is equivalent to the Indian Secondary examination.

Proof of residence

Every learner uploads one of the following as proof of residential address:

  • Ration card or Aadhaar card.
  • An appointment letter from your employer on the employer's letterhead.
  • A water, telephone or electricity bill, or a statement of a running bank account.
  • An Income Tax assessment order or an Election Commission voter identity card.
  • For a minor, a parent's passport.

If you live in rented accommodation, NIOS accepts proof of your permanent address together with your present rented address, supported by a valid rent agreement.

Street children, destitute learners, migrants, slum dwellers and orphans without a residential address of their own submit a self-certificate stating their category, and give a contact address for correspondence. The self-certificate is countersigned by the sponsoring guardian, such as an NGO or orphan home, and attested by a government official at panchayat, municipal, block or district level or above, with names, designations, addresses and official stamps.

Category certificates

Upload these only if they apply to you:

  • SC, ST or OBC learners: a self-attested copy of the social category or caste certificate.
  • Ex-servicemen: an ex-serviceman certificate from the employer.
  • Learners with a disability: a disability certificate from a government hospital, not a private nursing home, stating the nature and extent of the disability.

SC/ST learners, ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities need these certificates to claim the lower admission fee. How the fee changes is explained in our NIOS admission fees guide.

Special cases

Some learners need a different or extra document:

  • Orphans, juveniles and street children: a medico-legal certificate with an affidavit issued by a First Class Magistrate, or a copy of an Aadhaar card, as proof of date of birth.
  • Part admission or On-Demand admission (Streams 2, 3 and 4): the failed mark sheet or admit card from your previous board, along with the other documents.
  • Transfer of Credit: you also send the original failed mark sheet, with your reference or enrolment number written on it, to the NIOS Regional Centre or Online Cell named in the Prospectus.

Our Transfer of Credit guide explains which subjects can be carried over.

Preparing your scans

The points below are our general guidance for a smooth upload, not NIOS rules. Always follow the instructions and limits shown on the online form itself.

  • Scan the original document in colour, with all four corners visible and every word readable.
  • Check that your name, date of birth and parents' names match across your documents. NIOS checks Aadhaar details against your name and gender as printed on the card, and a mismatch stops the registration.
  • Check the date of birth very carefully. NIOS states that the date of birth given in the admission form cannot be changed later.
  • Keep every original safe. NIOS can ask to see the printed form and documents later.
  • Use the file type and size the form asks for. We could not confirm official limits, so we do not quote any.

Avoiding rejection and cancellation

NIOS can cancel an admission even after it has been accepted, and the fee is not refunded. The official reasons include:

  • Required supporting documents are missing or incomplete.
  • False documents, or incomplete or wrong information, are submitted.
  • Required information is hidden.
  • The educational qualification or minimum age is not met.
  • The Secondary examination was not passed from a recognised board (for Class 12).
You cannot change the application after paying the fee. If you are unable to upload the required documents during the admission block, the Prospectus allows a change of block or stream to upload them later, for a fee of ₹700.

NIOS admission documents: questions

Which documents do I need for NIOS Class 10 admission?

A photo, signature, identity proof, proof of residence, a Class 8 mark sheet or self-certificate, and proof of date of birth such as a birth certificate, passport, school-leaving certificate or Aadhaar card with the date of birth printed. Add a category certificate if one applies to you.

Which documents are required for NIOS Class 12 admission?

A photo, signature, identity proof, proof of residence and your Class 10 mark sheet or certificate. For Class 12, the Class 10 certificate is the only proof of age NIOS accepts.

Can I use Aadhaar as proof of date of birth?

For Class 10, yes, if the date of birth is printed on the card. For Class 12, no: NIOS accepts only the Class 10 certificate as proof of age.

Do I need to post photocopies to NIOS?

No. You upload scans of the originals. NIOS asks for a printed form and documents only if it needs them, and tells you by email and SMS. Transfer of Credit applicants also send the original failed mark sheet.

What if my name is spelled differently on two documents?

NIOS validates Aadhaar details and can cancel admissions with incorrect information, so sort out the difference before you apply. If you are unsure, ask your study centre or the NIOS Regional Centre before you submit the form.
